When you are checking out homes in pursuit of purchasing on, it is a a great idea to make observations with all five of your senses. This may seem silly... but the nose KNOWS!
The nose is sometimes under utilized. Your sense of smell can help you detect issues that could cost you money if gone unnoticed until later.
If you notice these odors and are still considering a purchase, you may wish to hire a professional who can come in and identify the cause and give you an estimate for fixing the problem.
* Cigarette smoke:
Heavy smoke odors can nearly be impossible to remove from carpets, walls, cabinets, and wood trim. AND even this can be hazardous to your health!
A pungent stale smell could be a problem stemming from moisture issues or even hidden m_ _ _ (bio-organic materials... EEK!) This can be a problem to people with allergies and asthma.
A rotten egg smell may indicate a dangerous gas leak somewhere in the house.
